Where It Grows

In Colombia the mora has been known to grow well in areas of 1200 to 3500 meters above sea level. For the best amounts of fruit produced, the ideal area for growth should be 1800 to 2000 meters above sea level, where the coldest temperatures in the winter range from 12-18C, with an average humidity level of 80-90%, bright sunshine and precipitation levels of 1500 -2500 mm per year.

Mora is susceptible to frost.

How it Grows (Agro-Ecology)

Mora de Castilla will grow best in clay fields that can hold an amble supply of water and are rich in phosphorus and potassium. There has to be a balance between calcium (Ca}, magnesium (Mg} and Potassium (K} of 2:1:1. A high level of boron will also prevent viral infections.

There must be good drainage as the plant is susceptible to waterlog problems. It adapts well to acidic pH. Most people build canals to ease the drainage problem. In case of insufficient water the berries will be of poor quality, and very sour.

The area under the plant should be free of any debris that will prohibit the roots from developing.
